Cat's Corner is a small, independently owned bookstore opened in May of 2023 and housing approximately 8,000 used and new books, both fiction and nonfiction. Most of the books are used, priced half-off the original retail price or less. As the store grows, I may consider offering a selection of new books, especially graphic novels, most asked for authors, and current young adult/kids books, especially those on the North Carolina "Battle of the Books" lists. I also carry a line of greeting cards, bookmarks, puzzles, and other stationery items that I just find fun.
As many people have already found out by stopping in, I do not have cats in my store (even though I love that idea). I knew the name may cause some confusion, but my name is Catherine and I go by "Cat". And luckily, my store space is in a sort of corner to the shopping center ... it just made sense.
I have had the question asked many, many times - "What made you want to open a bookstore?" So, I start my story by stating that I am a retired math teacher, and that usually makes everyone question me even more. But in reality, I have always loved books, and this was a plan that I have had for years ... even before I started my teaching career. There was a point in college where I debated getting certified to teach English as well as Math. While I love literature and reading, the idea of grading math problems over papers or essays won out. Through my 20 years of teaching, I collected books, created my business plan, did a whole lot of research on opening a business, and saved money in preparation for my "retirement project". And I am so happy that I am finally here!
I hope this has enticed you enough to come in and say "hi", and maybe pick up a book or two! I look forward to meeting you!
