Autumn Reading Challenge Complete!!

I managed to finish my challenge sort of by accident.  I had a choice of a couple books from my "to be read (TBR)" list, but I was unsure whether they took place in autumn ... which was my last prompt.  I read "My Roommate is a Vampire" by Jenna Levine hoping that it would be a quick, easy read, and just maybe there would be some proof of autumn within.  Thankfully, I didn't have to wait long ... there are some email and text conversations between characters throughout the book, but right at the beginning of chapter 2 Frederick wrote a To-Do list dated October 15th!  YAY!!!

The book itself was okay, sort of cute, a bit corny, but a fun quick read.  Sometimes I just like something light, and I read a couple of those in this challenge.  Now I think I'm on to something darker!

Cat's Corner Winter Reading Challenge will be posted soon so that everyone has time to get their TBR list in order!  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and happy reading!

Autumn Reading Challenge Update 3

To fulfil my "Trees on the Cover" prompt, I read "The House on Tradd Street" by Karen White.  This book was recommended by a customer and when it came into the shop I put it into my TBR pile.  I'm pretty sure I mentioned that I was somewhat obsessed right now with paranormal romance, but most of the books I have been reading in this genre have been quite ... I don't know ... "heavy" may be a good word here.  This book was a good change.  It still has the paranormal parts (Melanie can see ghosts) but it was a lot lighter that my normal reads and I got through it pretty quick.  I also appreciate the happy ending with still giving more books to continue the main characters development.  Thanks for the recommendations ... I wasn't disappointed!

For my second "U" book (title or author name beginning with U) I chose to re-read "Unlaced" by Kristina Cook.  This book was a free kindle download (and as of this post it is still free), and not just KU but totally free!!!  This is a historical romance with a good story, strong female main character, and is pretty clean for a romance book.  If you do like historical romance without a lot of smut then I do recommend this one.  There are 3 other books in this series that follow some of the other characters as well.

Okay ladies and gents ... that's 5 down and 1 to go and 13 days left.  I'm not sure about the last one "read a book with an Autumn theme".  I have 3 possible books that I want to read but I'm not sure if any of them are set during Autumn.  I might find another book, or just not finish my challenge ... we'll see what happens!

Let me know if you are following along the challenge and how far you got!  Would love to hear about the books you read!  See you soon!!

Happy reading!

Autumn Reading Challenge Update 2

When I decided to give the prompt "read a book under 150 pages", I immediately went to the children's book room to pick something out.  While I had seen all the movies, I had never read a book by Roald Dahl and I just thought this is the perfect opportunity!  I chose "James and the Giant Peach" for this challenge.  This was a really easy read and I love how he brings out the personality of each character through his writing.  I'm definitely going to read some more Dahl books as they come into the store!

Over the last week, I also finished J.R. Ward's "Lover Eternal" for the "read a book with monsters" theme.  This book is the second in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, which thanks to a couple of regular customers in the shop I have now become totally addicted!  If you are a fan of the vampire/paranormal romance genre and have never read J.R. Ward, I do suggest you give them a try.  However, I would start with book one ("Dark Lover").  The books can be read out of order but the characters do cross over in important ways, so starting at the beginning will get you an introduction to most of the Brotherhood and you will be less likely to be lost in later books.

If you have joined me in reading through the challenge themes for the Autumn Reading Challenge, I would love to know what books you have been completing!  Almost halfway through and I have completed half of the challenge ... but I'm slightly worries about the other 3 themes!  Hopefully they will come together soon!!

Happy Reading!

Autumn Reading Challenge Update 1

It's been two weeks since I posted the Autumn Reading Challenge!  I hope everyone has a TBR list and had at least gotten started.  Six books may not seem like a lot (especially with a short one thrown in), but with Thanksgiving 6 weeks away you may have less reading time that you were hoping for!  I have most of my books picked out, but "Trees on the cover" is giving me some worry.  That theme may not be completed until last ... depending on what new books happen to come into the store.
I am on my way, and managed to finish my "Non-fiction" book a few days ago.  I was not a huge die-hard fan of Friends ... I like the show, just never got to the point that I HAD to be home to watch it.  But one of my favorite movies is The Whole Nine Yards.  I think the Matthew Perry / Bruce Willis combination in this movie is hilarious!  I am trying to read more non-fiction, more so in the form of memoirs or biographies, and when this book came into the store I put it on my TBR stack.

I had no idea of Matthew Perry's addiction and how bad it truly was.  He has a special kind of courage and humor, that made reading about his life quite interesting.  If you enjoy memoirs on "current people", then I do recommend this one!

Autumn Reading Challenge 2023

Do you participate in reading challenges?  I have read blogs and watched YouTube videos of various reading challenges and always thought it would be fun. But other than a "Goodreads set the number of books you want to read this year" challenge, I haven't jumped into one yet.  Now that I have the store, I think it's time ... don't ya think?!   Who's with me?

This is just a little challenge for a bit of fun.  Try to read all 6 books in the two months of October and November, using the themes given.  I’m not here to check on you, so do the best you can and see how far you go.  I will post my progress on the Cat’s Corner website blog, Facebook, and Instagram.  If you feel like sharing, I would love to know what everyone else is reading!

Read a book that has/is …
an Autumn theme (can include Halloween or Thanksgiving, or just set in the Fall)
Under 150 pages (or a short story / collection)
Trees on the cover
“U” as the first letter in the title (or author name)
Monsters (or vampires, werewolves, witches, etc.)
Non-fiction

Good luck and have fun!!
